Military Appreciation Days
May 1 - 31, 2019 w Myrtle Beach, SC
Myrtle Beach celebrates Military Appreciation Days during the month of May with a full schedule of activities, including a Welcome Home for Vietnam veterans. Keni Thomas, decorated US Army veteran-turned-country-musician, will serve as our 2019 Grand Marshal for the Military Appreciation Days parade on Saturday, May 25. Join us as we honor the men, women and families of our Armed Forces during May.
SSgt Thomas deployed to Somalia in 1993 with the Third Ranger Battalion as part of an elite special operation called Task Force Ranger. October 3, 1993, Thomas and his fellow Rangers distinguished themselves in an 18-hour firefighter that would later be recounted in the book and movie Black Hawk Down. Nineteen Americans died and 78 were wounded in the worst urban combat for US troops since WWII.
After Mogadishu, SSGT Thomas volunteered for one more enlistment, becoming an assistant team leader for a six-man recon team and earning his master parachutist rating with more than 400 military freefall jumps. In 1997, Thomas traded his military boots for a microphone and now works full-time as an award-winning country music artist and songwriter in Nashville. Our news release announcing Thomas as this year's Grand Marshal has more information about his background and career.
The Military Appreciation Days Parade returns to the site of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, now known as The Market Common. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, and travels Howard Avenue and Farrow Parkway. We expect this year's parade to be one of the biggest and best ever! Parade Entry Forms and Band Entry Forms are available now, so sign up!
These month-long activities are sponsored by the City of Myrtle Beach, PGBA, LLC, and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce as a "thank you" to our dedicated service men and women -- and their families. The celebration includes active duty military personnel, reserves, the National Guard and veterans from all service branches. During May, military personnel and their families also can look for discounts to area restaurants and attractions, so that they can enjoy the activities.
Our gratitude is evident during the big Family Picnic, Saturday, May 25, in Grand Park at The Market Common. Pease join us for lunch prepared by the Omar Shriners Chefs. The picnic is free for all, courtesy of PGBA, LLC. Also featured are military exhibits, kids' activities and more, including a chance to meet Keni Thomas!
